My name is Robin Huffman. My life forever changed when my mom (and best friend) was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and died at the age of 53. The journey of walking alongside my mom through her treatments, surgery, terminal diagnosis, and hospice was the catalyst for me to come face-to-face with my own mortality and to seek out every chance to live life to the fullest.
This experience combined with previously watching one of my grandparents live for years without the ability to speak, write, or take care of himself (the lingering effects of a stroke) caused me to begin considering what preferences or choices I would have if I ever faced a similar situation.
And, then fast-forward to a health crisis of my own, I was once again reminded that our days are not infinite. As someone who loves to research and considers herself to be courageous with a deep sense of agency, I started to take action to better understand this inevitable part of life - and the emerging and innovative choices available - so that when the end of life arrives it will be more of an acquaintance than a complete stranger.
My hope is that I can help others by taking some of the fear and uncertainty out of the end of life through preparation and planning. By starting with our end in mind, I believe we are also better equipped to lead meaningful lives with intentionality.
For nearly 20 years, I’ve been leading large-scale change and communication strategies in the financial services industry. I’ve also dedicated the last couple of decades to volunteering in various ways such as facilitating adult grief support groups, serving on a non-profit board at a center dedicated to supporting grieving children and teens, and volunteering with a local hospice organization.
While I’ve always been actively involved in my community, I knew that serving others as they navigate the end of life would one day become even more prominent in my life. As a lifelong learner, I received my death doula certification and continue to build my knowledge and network with the goal of meeting my clients’ unique needs.
