How Families, Professionals, and Institutions Can Make the Hidden Work of Incapacity and Death Easier to Navigate
The Great Wealth Transfer gets the headlines. The Great Admin Transfer is what families actually have to navigate.
When someone becomes incapacitated or dies, families do not simply inherit assets. They inherit decisions, deadlines, paperwork, digital accounts, household responsibilities, and a maze of institutional processes often while grieving or already overwhelmed.
Most conversations about preparation focus on legal documents, financial planning, or checklists. Those tools matter, but they do not fully prepare families for the work of carrying out a plan.
The greatest burden often appears in the gaps: information that cannot be found, responsibilities no one knew existed, organizations with conflicting requirements, and tasks that become much harder when something does not go as expected.
After Robin’s mother died unexpectedly at 53, she realized that retirement and the life we intend to live someday is never guaranteed. She set a goal to explore 40 countries by 40 and eventually traveled to more than 45 countries and all seven continents, including Antarctica.
That loss also began a decades-long journey through grief support, change leadership, end-of-life education, and the administrative realities families face when life changes suddenly.
